RICE – The Woodlands Christian Academy’s first season of 11-man football came to an end Friday night with a 49-13 loss to Muenster Sacred Heart in the TAPPS Division IV regional playoff at Rice ISD Stadium.

The undersized Warriors (6-5) couldn’t slow the Tigers on the ground, as Sacred Heart running back Sam Sparkman piled up 324 yards on 35 carries.

“Our defense played hard, but that number 20 (Sparkman) is pretty tough,” Warriors’ coach Jerry Bradshaw said. “Their offensive line was bigger than anybody we had. But we haven’t made excuses in 11 games; everybody has been bigger than us.”

Sparkman, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior, scored five touchdowns on the night, pacing Sacred Heart (9-2) into the Division IV semifinals. He was one of three Tigers to amass at least 100 yards on the ground.

Trailing 19-0 after three Sparkman scoring runs, the Warriors made a game of it afer the second quarter.

After Sparkman scored his third touchdown on a 20-yard run, a defensive pass interference call against Sacred Heart gave the Warriors a first down on their 43.

Quarterback Troy Williams hit Zaheed Hall for a 38-yard gain down the sidelines and, on the next play, Williams found Ian Early in the end zone for a 19-yard score.

Sacred Heart fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Warriors recovered only 43 yards from the end zone. But a holding penalty negated a 25-yard touchdown scramble by Williams and the half ended with the score 19-7.

“That would have been nice if it would have happened,” Bradshaw said.

Sacred Heart pulled away with two scores in the third, a one-yard run by Sparkman and a five-yard run by quarterback Nathan Berend.

Early, a 6-foot-7 senior, caught another score in the third quarter, a 16-yarder.

Jordan Bruce picked off a pass for the Warriors and also had their longest gain from scrimmage, a 42-yard run in the third.

Berend and wide receiver John Krawietz added 109 yards on 13 carries and 102 yards on six carries, respectively. Sacred Heart ground out 583 rushing yards on 60 carries.

“We didn’t get beat by any dog tonight, that was a good team,” Bradshaw said.
