St. John’s boys, girls runners fourth at SPC
By MIKE TENNEY
The St. John’s boys and girls cross country teams each placed fourth last Saturday morning at the Southwest Preparatory Conference meets in Fort Worth.
“Both teams did great,” said St. John’s girls head coach Rachel Skinner. “I thought we ran really well and the boys did very well. It was a good day for both of us.”
The young girls scored 112 points, putting them ahead of Kinkaid, fifth with 122, and Episcopal, sixth with 164.
In all, 18 teams competed.
The Mavericks had two girls in the top five with junior Meredith Gamble (12:12.3) finishing third overall, while junior Sara Patterson (12:27.6) was fifth out of over 150 runners.
“Those two ran very well” said Skinner. “It’s interesting. Meredith ran on this same course a couple of weeks ago in a warm-up race and had the exact same time Saturday she had that day. And I thought she ran real well that day, so she just went out Saturday and duplicated it. And Sara ran a great race. She was not far behind Meredith all the way.”
After them, freshman Anne Johnson (12:51) was next for the Mavericks and 27th in the field. Sophomore Jessica Van Sweringen (13:16.6) took fourth for her team and 32nd. Freshman Meredith Viguet (13:42.2) completed the scoring for the Mavs.
“The best thing about this team is that all those girls should be back because none of them are seniors,” said Skinner. “And they all had their best times at SPC, so I think this meet is a real confidence builder to them because I think it’s a real launching point for the type of team we can be next year and beyond. Especially with the type of improvement I thought the girls made just this year.”
Ilana Leuchtag (12:36.7) had Kinkaid’s highest finish, coming in 11th in the race. Jessica Rosenthal (12:58.1) was 22nd and Lilian Nwora (13:00) was right behind her in 23rd place. Rachel Rosenthal (13:16.3) placed 31st and Madeline Schlesinger (13:19.7) took 35th for the Falcons’ final tally.
Episcopal sophomore Sarah Yeates (12:31.2) was the Knights’ top runner at SPC, placing tenth for the girls. Alex Perouty (12:39.8) came in second for the Knights and 13th overall as EHS had four runners in the top 50.
Taylor Buckner (13:19) was 33rd and Caroline Martin (13:31.8) finished 49th.
St. Stephen’ won the girls race with just 70 points. Greenhill was second with 97 points and Episcopal School of Dallas was third with 103, just nine below the Mavericks.
In the boys event, St. John’s senior Carlos Falcon placed sixth (16:47.9) to lead his team, which scored 152 points to place 14 points ahead of fifth place Epsicopal School of Dallas, with 166.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School won the SPC boys title with 93 points, just edging runner-up Greenhill, which had 95. St. Mary’s Hall was third with 111.
Henry Chapman (17:26.3) was 17th overall and second for the Mavericks while Ben Marek (17:52.8) rounded out the top 30.
Derek Fossi (18:28) and Jonathon Schulz (18:28.7) were side-by-side at the finish line, with Fossi 49th and Schulz coming in 50th.
“We had a good meet, but we really didn’t have a great meet,” said St. John’s head coach Richie Mercado. “We were hoping we could get in top three and I thought we just didn’t run our best.
“But then I see that seven out of our 10 runners had their personal best and we had two All-Conference runners (again) and I can’t be disappointed.”
Matt Johnson (17:37.5) and Edric Martinez (17:47) were Kinkaid’s top runners as the Falcons had all five runners in the top 46 and ninth in the team standings.
Johnson was officially 21st and Martinez was 25th.
Ace Isidro (18:13.4) took 41st place while Marcus Giannini (18:22) and Travis Gill (18:25) were in single file at the finish line. Giannini was 45th in the field and Gill 46th.
Episcopal placed 13th with Chance Siller (17:47) coming in 26th for the Knights highest finish.
All individual runners who finish in the top 20 are automatically named All-Conference in the SPC.
