In TAPPS-3A bi-district action, Bay Area Christian appears primed to take on their next challenger who is still waiting to be determined after an easy 62-15 win over Flower Mound Coram Deo on Friday night.
The Broncos won't know who that will be until the winner of the Carrolton Christian and Dallas Shelton game is known.
Darwin Pennye, Bay Area Christian's head coach, feels pretty confident that they will be facing a Carrolton team, but no one knows for sure until tomorrow. Regardless of which team, the Broncos face, they will take with them, both a strong offense and defense. With 76 carries totaling 327 yards, the Broncos kept their offense hoping all night long.
#10, Will Weeks rushed his way to a total of 141 yards; 55 of those yards came in the 1st quarter. #30, Trace Burrows also saw a lot of action, contributing 106 yards of offense to the effort. #44, Andy Freberg's 81 yard punt return helped secure the blow out win over the Lions.
Capitalizing on numerous mistakes, the Broncos had an easy time scoring point after point. The Lion's only two touchdowns came after hard-fought drives, the first in the third quarter and the second and final touch down occurring in the fourth quarter. With three turnovers throughout the game, the Lions' kept a hungry Bronco offense off the side-lines and in the game, scoring points in all but one drive.
Looking to next week, Pennye is optimistic that his Broncos can do well. When asked about how teams he might encounter next weekend might play Pennye said: “The one thing I believe is that you have to run the ball to be successful, I think we will see more diversity so far as people mixing the pass and the run, and we have to make sure we control the ball more.”
On paper, Carrolton looks like the most likely opponent for the Broncos next weekend. If that's the case, Pennye and his Broncos will be traveling to Temple to face Carrolton in yet one more rung of the State play-off ladder. In discussing his likely opponent, Pennye said: “Carrolton plays in a tougher district, and finished second within their district. “I think we will do well, and this will give us the opportunity to get back where we were last year.” We've lost some seniors and had some injuries but we're getting one of our best players, Austin Kennedy back next week, he hasn't played in about four weeks, so next week, both our offense and defense will be looking good.”
The Broncos running game looked strong throughout the game with six different players taking on TD's. But according to Pennye, there are some area they need to work on if they are going to finish strong and be in contention for the State championship. “We need to shore up our run defense, we saw a different type of running offense than we were expecting.” “ We also need to improve our passing game more.”
No doubt the next team the Broncos will face will be a challenge. But with excellent runners such as Will Weeks, and Trace Burrows, good passing from Jared Fuqua, and consistent point-afters from Karlis Ercums, the Broncos have a good chance at taking the State title.
