History made in Round Rock
By MIKE TAYLOR
Words cannot do it justice.
What The Woodlands runners accomplished Saturday is a feat you and I will likely never again see in our lifetimes.
The increased level of competition in all sports across the state will make sure of that. Races are faster, and also closer, than ever. Things aren’t going in the other direction overnight.
Only once before in the history of the Texas state cross country meet has a school won both team titles and both individual titles in the same year.
That Reed Connor and Sarah Andrews won their crowns by 12.65 and 11.03 seconds, respectively, doesn’t begin to explain their dominance.
There’s a link to video of both the girls and boys 5A races on flotrack.org. All I can say is you have got to see it.
UIL fouls up results
On another note, the University Interscholastic League deserves a slap on the wrist for its handling of the meet’s results.
Saturday afternoon, hours after the smaller class races had been completed, only the 1A results were available on active.com, the site that hosted the UIL’s results page.
Around the time of the 5A races, the 2A-4A results were finally posted. The girls 5A results were also placed on the site quickly thereafter.
But as of late Saturday night the boys results were still not available. Links to the boys team and overall results continually brought up the girls team and overall results instead. This left curious fans in the dark when they didn’t need to be.
So what happened? Did the UIL official in charge of getting the results out to the masses click a button, not realizing it was the wrong one, then disappear from work for the rest of the day — without checking whether they had done their job correctly?!
Sheesh, give me a break.
Posters on TXrunning.com’s state results message board were up in arms, and rightfully so.
If the UIL can’t handle such a simple task at one of the biggest prep events of the year, why should it be trusted to appropriately administer a steroid test?
Out but not down
The Oak Ridge football team deserves props for its excellent display Friday night in the first round of the Division II state playoffs. The War Eagles, after falling behind 14-0, gave heavily favored Klein Oak all it could handle, falling by a mere seven points, 28-21, and outgaining the powerful Panthers offense in the process.
