Brod, Van Putten collect strong week on lanes
By ROBERT AVERY
The Strikes & Spares editor was wondering when Eddie Brod was going to lift off from the launching pad.
This past week, the Top-10 bowler from the 2007-2008 season did just that in spectacular fashion when Eddie employed a 299 game that lifted him to a rare 800 series during play in the Sparetime Mixed League at Armadilla I Lanes. He canned a terrific 830 series, the highest three-game score in the city last week.
The 830 gave Eddie the maximum of 50 points towards the Top-10 list and his 299 gave him an additional 25 points for a quick 75 points. It vaulted him from non-appearance status in the Top-10 all the way to second, just five points behind No. 1 Manny Garcia.
Eddie finished last season tied for fourth place with 135 points, so in dramatic fashion he’s well on his way to bettering that total.
But Eddie didn’t have a monopoly on the excitement in the Sparetime Mixed League. Nathan Van Putten climbed into a share of third place on the Top-10 list when he rolled a 300 game, good for 40 points towards the Top-10 list. It comes on top of the 15 points he already had. He joins Doug Wright at 55 points for that share of third. Nathan missed collecting 15 additional points by two pins on his three-game total, which would have gotten him within ten points of grabbing a share of No. 1.
Nathan, a recent graduate of Memorial High School, was also red-hot in three other leagues. In the Latecomers League, Nathan co-led the league with a 736 series. In the Friday Nite Live League, he scored a 759 series, the second-best score for that league. Still not done, Nathan collared a 732 series in the Occidental Mixed League, the third-best three-game score for that league.
On the women’s side, we now have a tie for No. 1 after Shelby Thurston rolled her second 700 series of the season thanks to a 740 series. It was aided by a super 279 game. Shelby and Heather Jones now both have 50 points.
In other action at Sparetime, Mike Anders scored a 728 series, Jack Simmons cornered a 720 and Gene Hall belted out a 707 series. For the ladies in Sparetime Mixed, Heather Jones rolled a 659 series and Michele Jones found a 238 game.
Returning to Latecomers, Justin McDonald matched Nathan pin-for-pin in grabbing a 736 series. Rocky Zurovec finished just eight pins back and Rusty Davis was just as hot, following a 727 series. Eddie Brod resurfaced and came up with a 718 series. For the women, Jean Cope grabbed a 696 series and 269 game.
Charlie Mills directed things in the Occidental Mixed League with his 785 series, giving him 15 points towards the Top-10 list. Jeff Clark also grabbed 15 points when he finished with a 782 series. Already owner of 15 points, he now has 30. Both Jeff and Charlie scored a 279 game for high-game honors. Roger Banks scored a 712 series.
For the ladies in Occidental Mixed, Christi Greenlee scored a 246 game and Jennifer Rex nabbed a 618 series.
Brian Dulle’s 768 series led the Friday Nite Live League. After Nathan’s 759 series, Charles Vaughan was just one pin back at 758 and Eddie Brod scored a 754 series with the aid of a 289 game. Donnie Williams rolled a 702.
Play in the Arabia Shriners League had A.B. Jimenez scoring a 575 series, Cliff Jennings nabbing a 235 and Tina Blackwell scoring a 481 series.
Doug Lacy, Jr.’s 745 series and 276 game led the Fun Lovers Seniors League.
Play in the SCORA League featured Wiley Maris’ 698 series and 277 game. Tammy Lehew’s 590 and 214 game topped the Thursday Nite Ladies League and Ruby Hunter’s 533 series and 213 game led the Bay Foursome League. Robelyn Oliver’s 564 and 216 game guided the women in Bowlerettes.
For the kids, Jose Rosales received a 477 series and Chris Diouhy scored a 205 game. In Challengers B, Eric Wixson nabbed a 662 series and 270 game. Jessica Haynes found a 232 game and 582 series.
