Humble sets sights on formidable Katy
By KEVIN KOLOIAN
With its defense getting ripped for chunks of yardage time after time, Humble’s offense had to play a game of keep-away in its 31-26 first-round playoff win Friday night over Houston Chavez at Thorne Stadium.
It was a game that worked against the Lobos, but it’s a game the Wildcats cannot afford to play if they want to beat Katy in the second round.
If it wasn’t for the Lobos’ quarterback Andre Kelly’s fumble on the Humble 4-yard line with 22 seconds remaining in the game the Wildcats may have been the ones who are hanging up their helmets for the season.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Humble head coach Walt Beasley said the reason the defense’s struggles were partially due to the speed and efficiency of Humble’s offense - the Wildcats scored two touchdowns on its first two plays from scrimmage, barely giving the defense any time to rest.
“I think what happened is because we scored so quick early in the game our defense had to go back out and got tired early and it’s hard to recover from that,” Beasley said. “When you have to play that much at the beginning of the game you get so tired, making it really hard to bounce back.”
Humble’s first touchdown came on an 89-yard Keith Baker pass to Walter Pinon. Following a short Chavez drive, Humble’s offense struck quickly again. This time, Baker ran the ball 43 yards for a touchdown.
Humble found the end zone two other times and made a field goal in the second quarter, capping its scoring for the day.
All the while, Chavez was picking up yards and momentum, outgaining Humble 503-340 on the day. The Lobos scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, leaving Humble’s offense questioning itself going into the locker room leading 31-14.
Fortunately for Humble, on the strength of his arm and feet, Baker showed the ball control needed to keep his defense off the field.
Baker passed for 161 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 134 yards. Not picky with his receivers, Baker hooked up with five different receivers, going 8-for-13 with no interceptions.
Heading into next week’s game against perennial playoff competitor Katy, Humble’s defense needs to toughen up, Beasley said.
“We are going to do what we do best and hopefully play a little tougher on defense and not turn the ball over,” Beasley said. “They make a living running the football. They are big on the offensive line and are going to come right at us, so we are really going to have to play our best game to have a chance to win.”
