Ikea works to help community
Cute, comfy soft toys. What would childhood be like without them? Plush teddy and fuzzy rabbit. Who can forget them? They were our daily companions… our fearless protectors.
This holiday season the softest, sweetest and cuddliest IKEA soft toys – amazingly priced – will again be available at all IKEA stores nationwide. These soft toys range in price from $1.49 up to only $19.99. And with each purchase, between November 1 – December 24th, approximately $1.30 goes to IKEA’s partners UNICEF and Save the Children’s educational programs (16 projects in total ) in 14 developing countries around the world.**
Funds raised during the IKEA 2008 Soft Toy Campaign will support projects to help improve school facilities, give access to water and sanitation, strengthen the right to education for disabled children, and provide educational supplies like books, pencils and writing pads for children and teachers. It’s a program with a big heart; one that makes it possible to join efforts to ensure all children have access to education. This program helps to build the knowledge necessary to combat disease and eradicate poverty and hunger for millions of children around the world.
“The IKEA Soft Toy Campaign is a heart warming opportunity for holiday shoppers to give a memorable gift, at a low price, that gives back to support the quality of life for so many children,” stated IEKA Houston Store Manager, Johnny Andersen. Since 2003, soft toy sales raised a total of $15 Million Dollars. The goal this year is to raise another $6 Million Dollars.
Last year, the IKEA US stores lead the IKEA global effort with the highest soft toy sales. The result was over $500,000. Important to note is that it takes only one dollar to buy books and pencils for five children in the developing world. These funds will go a long way towards helping children reach their full potential.
"Thanks to IKEA we have been able to improve the rights and lives of many children around the world. Thousands of children on three continents, from Albania to China to the Ivory Coast, are now supported and receive an education thanks to this campaign. Together we have the knowledge, the resources and the power to make a difference to millions of vulnerable children around the world" says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Secretary General Save the Children. The 2008 campaign will benefit eight Save the Children projects (in Albania, Bangladesh, China, India, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Russia and Vietnam) and eight UNICEF projects (in Macedonia, Moldova, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and two in Vietnam). ***
"IKEA's innovative partnership with UNICEF is an important contribution to ensuring access to quality education for all children. Opportunities to go to school will empower girls and boys in developing countries to build better lives and realize their dreams," says Philip O'Brien, Director of UNICEF's Private Fundraising & Partnerships Division.
In addition to the soft toy initiative, this year also marks the 20th Anniversary for IKEA and the UNICEF holiday greeting card sales partnership. When you purchase UNICEF holiday cards at any IKEA US store, 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the cards go directly to the US Fund for UNICEF with IKEA donating an additional $1 per pack sold. The cards come in boxed choices, from 10 up to 20 cards per box and range in price from $10-$20. IKEA customers have helped to generate over $3 million in support of UNICEF’s life saving programs through greeting card purchases since the partnership began in 1988.
