Early voting starts for Humble ISD tax rollback

A day after droves of voters headed to the polls to vote Nov. 4, the early voting for the Humble Independent School District tax rollback opened its doors the next day to few voters.

The rollback would increase the ad valorem tax by 13 cents per $100 of property value to bring the total to $1.52 per $100 of value, the maximum allowed by the state. The tax would go toward the Maintenance & Operations budget of the school district, which pays staff salaries.

Though they did not expect many people to cast their vote in favor of or against the tax rate hike, poll workers at the Humble City Hall were surprised by the people ready to vote after the whirlwind of election season.

By 3 p.m. Nov. 5, 15 voters had made their way through City Hall and it was only the first day the booths were available for voting on the rollback.

“We were excited about the voters coming through. This is just the beginning so I think this could be an indication of how important this bond is,” poll worker Melanie Nolan said.

More voters showed up to the Humble ISD Administration Building to vote though most made sure to stop by and vote during their lunch break.

Poll workers estimated more than 36 voters had cast their ballot by mid-afternoon, which thrilled the workers about the prospect of more voters as the day of the election, Nov. 22, draws near.

Early voting for Humble ISD’s tax rollback election continues through Nov. 18, leading up to election day Nov. 22.
