By ANDREA HENDERSON
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Program will use a state grant to better monitor sex offenders living in the county.
The State Criminal Justice Planning Fund awarded sheriff’s office a three-year $65,000 Sex Offender Registration, Monitoring and Compliance Grant
The grant will pay for a detective position that would be dedicated to tracking and monitoring sex offenders.
Under the grant, the detective will compile information on every sex offender, and will use the data to make sure authorities now an offender’s whereabouts and whether the offender is complying with the law.
“The funding is very beneficial to the county and can really take our department and city to another level on sex offender laws,” Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office spokesperson Terriann Carlson said.
Sheriff Milton Wright saw the need for the grant after the department investigated the registered sex offenders living the county earlier this year.
In January, the sheriff’s office interviewed 168 registered sex offenders living in the county. According to a statement, authorities found that 130 offenders were complying with all the laws, and 38 offenders were in violation and would have to appear in court.
