The Deer Park Lady Deer Volleyball Team moved into the Area Round Championship game after disposing of the North Shore Lady Mustangs in the Bi-District Championship round by a score of 25-13, 25-10, 25-18.

After taking the Bi-District round, the girls were set to face a tough opponent in the Fort Bend Travis Lady Tigers at neutral site Clear Brook High School.

Both teams were more then ready for the showdown as they played at a furious pace from the opening serve.

The Lady Deer came on strong in the opening moments of the first set with a slight lead on the Lady Tigers; however, Travis would respond by squaring the match at five all in the first.

Senior leaders Kristen Cruse (6 Kills) and Brittany Weiler worked hard to keep the Lady Deer in the first set, but the Lady Tigers were able to hold off a feisty Lady Deer volleyball team and take the opening set by a score of 25-13.

The Lady Deer began the second set with a whole lot of intensity on defense as they were challenging hard at the net and diving all over a hardwood floor in attempts to keep their playoff run alive. Despite a tough noble effort in the second set, the Lady Deer dropped set two by a score of 25-18 and looked to have their backs against the wall in the third and final set.

The final set was a great display of courage and determination as the Lady Deer refused to go down with out giving a solid battle to a very talented Fort Bend Travis team. The Lady Deer laid it all out on the line for the final set, but the valiant effort wasn’t enough to overcome the two set deficit as the Lady Tigers of Travis took the final set 25-18.

Members of a Lady Deer team that gave a tremendous effort are: senior Kristen Cruse, senior Whitney Ellisor, senior Jaime Haas, senior Lara Johnson, senior Megan Matejka, senior Julie Niess, senior Rachel Wade, senior Brittany Weiler, junior Shalon Bridges, junior Ashley De La Garza, junior Erin Hines, junior Tyler Jenkins, junior Terra Peil, sophomore Haley Hoffman and freshman Tabitha Hawthone.

The Lady Deer Varsity Volleyball team finished with a 25-15 overall record along with a second place finish in District 22-5A and an 11-3 record in district play.

They are coached by head volleyball coach Gay Sabatell along with assistant coaches Jennifer Sheek, Ashley White and team trainer Lori Mahan.
