The city of Deer Park will hold the annual Holiday Banquet for senior citizens of the community on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center at 500 West 13th Street.

Virginia Harrell Smith, the organizer of the banquet, said the event attracts 400-500 people every year and this year a group called Rivenside will entertain the audience.

During the banquet, volunteers of the year awards will be handed out to those who have made an impact through volunteering their time to others. Door prizes will also be handed out to those who are present.

Numerous helpers from around the community including the Shell Serve Group will help serve the seniors their food for the evening.

Deer Park City Council has recently allocated $5,500 to pay for the banquet for the seniors from the Senior Citizen Trust Fund based on the request from the city’s Senior Citizen Commission.

According to the city’s Web site, the commission consists of seven members: Beckie Stockstill-Cobb; Rex Deshazo; Reba Kirkland; Charles Garrison; Wayne Riddle; Joyce Walker and Walter Marsh.

“It’s just a way of honoring our seniors in Deer Park,” Smith said.

Please call the Maxwell Adult Center at 281-478-7276 for more information or to R.S.V.P. to the event.
