Klein Promotes Energy Conservation

From Staff Reports
Updated: 11.14.08
The Klein ISD supports energy conservation through steps outlined in a district-wide energy plan and participation in CenterPoint Energy’s SCORE (Schools Conserving Resources) Program.

During 2007-2008, the KISD Board of Trustees adopted the state’s goal of a 5% electricity use reduction for each of the next six years beginning with 2007-2008. To support energy conservation, the district upgraded the lighting systems and the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at 16 campuses. The maintenance and energy management departments worked to match HVAC schedules to actual needs.

Even with an increase in student population and an increase in district square footage, the district was able to decrease its electricity use by 9%. The use of natural gas was decreased by 5.6%.

Through the CenterPoint program, the district saved $31,320 because of new construction lighting and HVAC at the Network Operations Center and the Police Department Building, a chiller upgrade at Eiland Elementary School, and roof upgrades at the central office, Krahn Elementary School, and Nitsch Elementary School.

Mr. Chad Corbitt, the district’s energy manager, reports that the success of energy savings in 2007-2008 are the result of teams working together to develop a sustainable energy management program and the implementation of energy saving measures across the district.
