Kingwood residents graduate from SHSU
Several Kingwood residents were among the August graduates from Sam Houston State University. Those students include Patricia Nell Almond, Bachelor of Fine Arts, theatre; Colleen Mary Campbell, Bachelor of Science, criminal justice; Timothy L. Cobb, Master of Business Administration, business administration ; Sarah Elaine Darbonne, Bachelor of Science, biology; Daniel Clinton Davison, Master of Arts, psy-clinical psychology; Zeinab Gaber El Shaal, Master of Education, administration; Patricia Burd Hitt, Master of Arts, special education; Lisa Parker Howard, Master of Library Science, library science; Cindy S. Jones, Bachelor of Science, political science; Kimberly D. Meaux, Bachelor of Business Administration, management; Clare Elizabeth Perkins, Master of Arts, counseling; and David Emil Schultz, Bachelor of Business Administration, general business.
Kingwood grad returns from overseas
Army National Guard Spec. Mark J. Blackwell has returned to the 236th Military Police Company in San Antonio after being deployed to an overseas forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Blackwell is a military police member with 11 years of military service. He is the son of Nancy and Jon Blackwell, of Kingwood. The specialist is a 1997 graduate of Kingwood High School.
Kingwood resident earns degree, joins Air Force
Aaron M. Alam graduated with a Bachelor of Science in aviation sciences from Baylor University during the summer commencement ceremonies Aug. 16. He is a 2003 graduate of Kingwood High School.
Alam will be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Air Force in October. He will begin his training in satellite communications at Lompoc Airforce Base in California.
Alam is the son of Al and Cindy Alam, of Kingwood.
Kingwood grad earns Honors Award
Bethany Waterman, of Kingwood, a junior majoring in architecture, recently completed the academic requirements for the General Honors Award in the OSU Honors College. She is the daughter of James and Loretta Waterman, of Kingwood, and is a 2006 graduate of Kingwood High School.
Army colonel deploys overseas
Army Lt. Col. Jodi L. Zajac has deployed overseas to a forward operating base to support the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Zajac, a brigade executive officer with 18 years of military service, is normally assigned to the 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade at Fort Polk in Leesville, La.
She is the daughter of John and Mary Wagner, of Kingwood. The colonel received a bachelor's degree in 1989 from Pennsylvania State University and earned a master's degree in 2002 from Webster University through the military extension program at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Kingwood grad receives highest honors
Alex Ayala, of Kingwood, received a 4.0 GPA at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin during the summer semester and was recognized by receiving a minor in business foundations with highest distinction. Ayala also has a 4.0 GPA in his major in the engineering department and received University Honors and was included on the EOE High Honor Roll during fall and spring semesters as well.
After one year of college Ayala has standing as a senior due to the many advanced placement courses he completed at Kingwood High School. He previously received recognition as a National AP Scholar due to his exceptional performance on the AP exams.
Ayala is enrolled in the Honors Program in chemical engineering. He is also a tutor for the University of Texas Learning Center as well as webmaster of Alpha Lambda Delta - Phi Eta Sigma, University of Texas Chapter, and he has served as a soccer referee for the University of Texas Division of Recreational Sports. In addition, he swims with the Longhorn Aquatics Masters swimming team.

Austin State University during August commencement exercises: Robert Jason Cagle, Bachelor of Business Administration, marketing; Patricia Gomez, Master of Education, educational leadership; Wesley James Solomon, Master of Education, educational leadership; and Joshua Edward Real, Bachelor of Fine Arts, theatre.
Student makes Dean’s List at Johns Hopkins
Colin Kleinguetl, of Kingwood, was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2008 semester of Johns Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Kleinguetl is the son of Molly Kleinguetl and attended Kingwood High School. He is majoring in molecular and cellular biology, and will graduate in May 2009.
Kingwood resident participates in community service project
Emily Weiss, a resident of Kingwood and a freshman at American University, participated in the Freshmen Service Experience, a community service project in which first-year students contributed nearly 10,000 hours of service at 37 sites around the Washington, D.C. area.
Kingwood resident named student leader
Charles Christopher Buffington IV, of Kingwood, has been named a resident assistant in Ellsworth Hall at the University of Kansas. Buffington is a sophomore at KU, majoring in biology.
He is the son of Chris and Laurie Buffington, of Kingwood, and is a graduate of Kingwood High School.
Kingwood student receives academic-athletic honors
Senior Adam McAlpine of the University of Texas at Tyler men's soccer team received ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America recently.
The award recognizes those student-athletes who not only excel on the field, but in the classroom as well. McAlpine was named to the first team.
McAlpine, a marketing major from Kingwood, is currently enrolled in UT Tyler’s Master of Business Administration program and has a 4.0 GPA in his graduate work. He finished his undergraduate degree in marketing with a 3.82 GPA.
As a four-year letter winner, McAlpine had an outstanding final season at the midfielder position for the Patriots. He started all 14 matches and had one goal and one assist on the year.
McAlpine is now eligible for Academic All-America voting. The 2008 Academic All-America team will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Former KHS grad receives military promotion
Katelyn Marie Haering, who is currently serving in Iraq, was meritoriously promoted to corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Haering is the daughter of Ray and Kathy Haering and sister of Matt Haering, of Palm City, Fla., formerly of Kingwood. She is also the granddaughter of Stan and Loretta Haering, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Vivian Leatherby, of Palm City.
Haering is a 2005 graduate of Kingwood High School.
