The Cy Ridge High offensive line has matured quite a bit since they were considered young and inexperienced at the beginning of the season.
“We’ve played 10 ballgames now,” Rams coach Gary Thiebaud said. “I expect them to do a good job up there. The young factor is over now.”
Cy Ridge (8-2), winners of six straight, will face Lufkin (7-4) in the second round of the UIL Class 5A Division II playoffs at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station, home of the Texas A&M Aggies football team.
“The kids are excited about going to Kyle Field,” Thiebaud said. “We’ve got to not let Lufkin have big plays, and we’ve got to execute on offense and block them up front. Special teams is going to be a big factor with field position.”
Senior quarterback Russell Shepard, an LSU commit, has 32 touchdowns, and it’s uncertain whether senior running back Hasan Lipscomb, who’s committed to LSU, will play against the Panthers.
Lipscomb left the season finale against Langham Creek with an injury and didn’t play in last Friday’s playoff opener against Round Rock. Thiebaud said his status is day-to-day.
Lufkin is led by defensive tackle JaMarkus McFarland, who’s being heavily recruited by Texas, Oklahoma and LSU.
The winner will face Garland Naaman Forest (9-2) or Copperas Cove (10-1) next week.
