Goodson teacher named Rising Star by OSU

Goodson Middle School physical education and health teacher John Griffin was presented the Oklahoma State University College of Education’s 2008 Rising Star Award at the 35th annual COE Scholarship and Awards Banquet.

The award annually recognizes College of Education alumni whose lives and achievements demonstrate promise of future leadership and bring distinction to the college.

Griffin earned his bachelor of science degree in physical education/health from OSU in 1999, and has 10 years of experience teaching in Texas and Oklahoma. He is the founder and coordinator of the Cy-Fair Physical Education Conference.


Griffin serves as an assistant football, track and cross country coach and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle Coach. He is also an assistant varsity and junior varsity girls basketball coach at Cypress Creek High School.

Cy Springs STARS robotics team wins tournament

Cypress Springs High School students in the Science, Technology, Aerospace and Robotics Society (STARS) of Cypress won the championship at the 5-Star Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology (BEST) Robotics tournament.

With the win, the STARS qualified for the Frontier Trails BEST Game Day Regional tournament to be held Dec. 6 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Winning team members were Frank Sebastianelli, Alex Almanza, Joseph Sanchez, Tyler Shutts, Justin Merkey, Alex Acosta and Adam Earls.

Other STARS team members were Aliaskar Amiji, Taha Amiji, Julia Dry, Andy Fan and mascot Nicolas Xiong.

Sampson and Yeager receive recognition

Sampson and Yeager elementary schools were formally honored for their selection to the Texas Business and Education Coalition 2008 Honor Roll during a recent awards ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio, which was sponsored by H-E-B and IBM.

Sampson and Yeager had the highest percentage of students performing at the Commended level in every subject over the past three school years.

Wal-Mart names Cole Teacher of the Year

Hamilton Middle School Life Skills teacher Terri Cole was named the Cypress Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market No. 3506 Teacher of the Year during a presentation at the school Nov. 7.

Wal-Mart manager Miriam Crosby presented Cole with a $100 Wal-Mart gift certificate to purchase supplies for her classroom. The school received an additional $1,000 grant in her honor.

Willbern reschedules track dedication

Willbern Elementary School’s Opening Day Parade to celebrate its new asphalt track has been rescheduled to Thursday, Dec. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at 10811 Goodspring Drive.

The original event was scheduled for Sept. 12, but was postponed due to Hurricane Ike.

The event will begin in the Willbern cafeteria, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside and a spirit parade around the track.

Mrs. Texas 2008 Bobbie Jo Compton is expected to be in attendance.
