EPA announces household waste drop off sites

Updated: 11.11.08
The Unified Command has established household hazardous waste drop-off stations for residents of Jefferson and Orange County areas for homes affected by flooding as a result of Hurricane Ike. The household hazardous waste drop-off locations are located in Jefferson and Orange counties.

The Jefferson County facility will be accepting debris November 15 and 16. It is located at the Southeast Regional Airport on North Hwy. 69 in Beaumont.

The Orange County facility will be accepting debris on the weekend of November 22 and 23. It is located at the Bridge City Intermediate School on 1029 W. Round Bunch Rd. in Bridge City.

The Jefferson County center will be open from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16. The Bridge City Intermediate School and Destroyer Avenue centers will be open from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23. Acceptable materials include cleaning supplies, automotive products, lawn and garden products, painting supplies, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals and other hazardous chemicals. Please clearly mark containers, and place leaking containers in plastic bags or other appropriate containers to prevent further spills.

Items that are not appropriate for drop off at the site include ammunitions, explosives, tires, general trash, animal manure and carcasses, human waste, needles, spoiled food, and other biological items, as well as household appliances, televisions, computers, and other electronic waste.

Be cautious around household hazardous chemicals, even if you are returning home for only a short time. Keep children and pets away from leaking or spilled household chemicals. It is not safe to combine household chemicals from leaking or damaged containers or to burn them. Do not dump chemicals down drains, on the ground, in storm sewers or toilets.

For more information about the drop-off center in Jefferson County, please call the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission at 409-899-8444 ext.251. In Orange County, please call the Orange City Hall (409) 735-6801. For additional information on household hazardous waste, visit EPA's Web site at http://www.epa.gov/hurricanes.
