Atascocita loses to Madison in 13-10 playoff thriller

The scoreboard shows that Atascocita fell 13-10 to Houston Madison in the opening round of the playoffs. What it doesn’t show, though, is how much of a scare the Eagles put into one of the most talented teams in the Houston area.
The two teams battled to a near-standstill for three quarters, with Atascocita holding onto a 3-0 lead thanks to an early Tony Seitz field goal and a stifling defensive performance that led Madison to temporarily bench star quarterback Broderick Thomas.
The Marlins finally got on the scoreboard after a 44-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to halfback Lester Tigler with just over a minute left in the third quarter. But, trailing 7-3, the Eagles responded with a touchdown of their own - a 2-yard run by Kent Brooks put Atascocita up 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter.
Thomas then answered with three straight big plays - a 12-yard pass to Jeffery Lewis, a 20-yard pass to Jordan Edwards and an 18-yard run of his own. Thomas set up a potential game-tying field goal from 33 yards out. But after kicker Jario Lopez’s attempt was blocked, Atascocita held on to its 10-7 lead.
The missed field goal put Atascocita in a bad spot - an Eagles defender tried to return the kick but was stopped at his own 6-yard line. The Eagles eventually had to punt, and on its ensuing possession Madison started from its own 40.
The great field position proved helpful for the Marlins. Thomas connected with Lewis for a 26-yard touchdown pass that gave Madison a 13-10 lead with 2:22 left in the game.
Atascocita still had one more chance. Taking over from his own 17 with no timeouts, quarterback Xzaviar Jackson cooly marched the Eagles down the field, completing three striaght passes for 47 yards and running for 10 more.
But on a first-down play from Madison’s 26, Jackson threw an interception in the end zone to Lewis that sealed the game.
Jackson went 7-18 for 107 yards, but the real star was Brooks, whose 108 yards rushing look more impressive given the defensive nature of the game.
