Health fair to offer families ideas for tasty food and exercise
By AUDREY M. MARKS
Looking for ways to improve your families eating habits or for more information on making healthier decisions? Stop by Katy ISD’s Fielder Elementary School Satuday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the ShipShape Health Fair to sample healthy foods.
The health fair is open to the entire Katy community.
“This event is geared to all of us who need a reality check to focus on our physical and emotional health,” Rosa Seymour, organizer of the fair said in an e-mail to The Sun. “Especially for families with young children, is our chance to build a foundation of healthy habits that will impact the way children react towards the abundance in which we live in and create for them selves healthy boundaries.”
The free event, being held at the school’s gym, will feature local organizations that promote healthy living and preventative care.
Seymour said the fair will provide families tips for transforming their lifestyles and using food as nourishment while instilling good habits in kids while they are young.
“This culture is a lot more sedentary than others and this generation is more sedentary than the previous ones,” Seymour said. “People have the misunderstanding that going to the gym 4 times a week is not to become a body builder or getting in shape for a bikini instead for necessary cardiovascular stimulation, weight control and preventing health complications as we age.”
She said she hopes the fair will help change misconceptions about exercise and healthier eating habits.
It “is all about taking small steps towards the big reward-a lasting healthy relationship with all good things around us, especially food,” Seymour said.
Physicians will also help educate families about the importance of vaccinations that can be obtained at low or no cost, to keep families healthy and avoid serious illness in the long term.
Presenters include local dentists, doctors, psychologists, the Katy YMCA, Young Chef’s Academy, Katy Fire Department’s Smokehouse, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, Westwood Gymnastics, Katy Fit, dieticians from the University of Houston and Maui Wowi treats.
