Cavs lose opener
Shooting only 28 percent from the floor, No. 11 College Park opened its season Tuesday night with a 71-55 loss at Cypress Woods.
Adam Rowe led the Cavaliers with 17 points, while guard Garrett Constance finished with 13 points. Constance got in foul trouble during the first few minutes of the game.
“Cy Woods is a very good basketball team,” CP head coach Clifton McNeely said. “They have all 12 players back from last year and they came out with a lot of energy. They did a great job of spreading the floor.”
Sam Ryan, the Cavs’ 6-foot-10 junior center, also slipped into foul trouble and wound up with four points. The Cavs were without senior forward Eddie Porter, who is recovering from an ankle sprain during the football season.
“We’ve got some role players who need to step up and become prime time players,” McNeely said. “We haven’t quite meshed yet.”
Ranked in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Class 5A preseason poll, the Cavs play in the Texas Invitational in Pasadena today, starting with Atascocita at 10:30 a.m. and followed with San Antonio Taft at 7 p.m.
Poor free throw shooting early in the game contributed to the Bulldogs’ season-opening loss Tuesday night. Magnolia made just two of nine free throws in the opening period.
Forward Michael La Chapelle scored 17 points for the Bulldogs. Josh Twardowski (10 points) hit back-to-back three pointers in the third quarter that pulled Magnolia to within four points.
The Bulldogs host their tournament starting today.
