LyondellBasell helps shelter open its doors

Updated: 11.06.08
Bay Area Turning Point’s women and children’s shelter re-opened their doors sooner than expected after Hurricane Ike, thanks to the generosity and quick action of LyondellBasell and its employees.

The company recently held a drive among employees on behalf of the shelter and collected $3,200 worth of cleaning supplies, cash donations, clothing, food and school supplies during a short four-day time frame. The company also made a contribution.

“Despite facing their own personal challenges, our employees realized how quickly the shelter needed to be re-opened and the response was overwhelming,” said Lori Gardner, a LyondellBasell employee who helped spearhead the drive.

The drive began after an urgent appeal from the Turning Point, which desperately needed supplies in order to allow its clients to go back to the shelter.

“The quick and selfless response from LyondellBasell employees demonstrated that community support is critical at this time,” said Diane Savage, president and CEO of Bay Area Turning Point.

“Unfortunately, research indicates that rates of domestic violence increase in the aftermath of a disaster.”

The gifts came from three of LyondellBasell’s Bay Area Houston plants: Bayport Choate, Bayport Underwood and the La Porte Complex.

Bay Area Turning Point serves southeast Harris and north Galveston counties, which compose the Greater Bay Area, a combined population of approximately 450,000.

The nonprofit, community-based social-service agency provides shelter and other assistance to families in need, as well as community education/crime prevention activities.

LyondellBasell Industries is one of the world’s largest polymers, petrochemicals and fuels companies, producing chemicals used in everyday products, such as medicines, foods, food packaging, paints and plastics.

LyondellBasell has five facilities in the Bay Area with more than 3,000 employees and contractors providing more than $1.4 billion to the local economy through payroll, benefits, purchases and taxes.

They produce chemicals used in everyday products, such as medicines, foods, food packaging, paints and plastics. Lyondell Chemical and Basell merged in December 2007 to form LyondellBasell Industries.
