Windsong service project catches expert’s eye
A recent article about a Windsong Intermediate service project to feed the homeless recently caught the attention of Cathryn Berger Kaye, a keynote speaker and author of The Complete Guide to Service Learning. The role of service learning for young students is an important topic to her.
Westwood Elementary Counselor Barbara Gruener and Westwood Principal Lynn Hobratschk had attended a workshop with Kaye in Washington DC recently. It was Gruener and Hobratschk who told Kaye about Windsong’s project.
The project involved students in Autumn Bockart and Jermaine Sonnier’s classes, who put together a feed-the-homeless project after reading the children’s book Maniac Magee.
“At Cathryn Berger Kaye’s request, I sent her the eLook article (eLook is Friendswood ISD’s online newsletter) and now Windsong is featured in an article by the expert,’ Gruener said. The article was also featured in the Friendswood Journal.
“You have to be really creative in the younger grades to create service-learning projects that work and keep service learning alive in the schools,” Gruener said. “Congrats to Autumn and Jermaine for a job well done.”
Cathryn Berger Kaye is an author, keynote speaker and workshop presenter. She is a National Service Learning consultant, recipient of the Inspirational Spirit Award Learn & Serve America 2005, author of The Complete Guide to Service Learning (Free Spirit Publishing 2004), a recipient of the Seal of Excellence by the Council for Service Learning Excellence, and Strategies for Success: A Learning Curriculum that Serves.
