County, poll workers set for historic election

It's all systems go for area poll workers and the Harris County Clerk's office for what has already proven to be a historic election. Today, Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman reminded voters who have not already voted in this election that Tuesdayis their final opportunity to cast votes in the Nov. 4, 2008 General and Special Elections.
Voters can expect to find over 50 contests for federal, state, and county offices on their ballot. A few voters will find a school board election or proposition presented by a local entity on the last page of their ballots. In the North Channel area, that will include school board races in Channelview ISD.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. All voters in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
"I strongly urge voters to know their voter registration status, know their precinct and know where their precinct is voting before heading to the polls," said Clerk Kaufman, the chief elections officer of the County.
"By law voters must vote at the poll where their precinct is voting on Election Day." According to the Clerk, a voter can check their voter registration status by calling the Voter Registrar office at 713-368-VOTE (8683) or visiting http://www.hcvoter.net/" target="_blank" href="http://www.hcvoter.net/">www.hcvoter.net. The Clerk also reminded voters that to vote, aside from a voter registration card, a person may present one of the following documents: a driver's license, a picture identification of any kind, a birth certificate, a U. S. Citizenship or Naturalization certificate, a U.S. passport, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter.
First time voters who registered by mail and did not provide their driver's license number or identification number will need to provide another form of identification other than their voter registration certificate. The Clerk urged voters to be patient, read all ballot instructions and review their choices before casting their votes. Voters may ask for assistance from election officials at the poll. In addition, voters may bring someone of their choosing to the polling place to provide assistance if they are disabled or need language assistance.
The Clerk also reminded voters that wearing campaign paraphernalia inside a polling place or within 100 feet of an outside door through which a voter may enter the building in which a polling place is located is prohibited by law. Additionally, voters are advised that a person may not use a cell phone within 100 feet of a voting station. Furthermore, a person may not use anymechanical or electronic means of recording images or sound within 100 feet of a voting station.
The Clerk also announced that nearly 40 percent of all the registered voters in Harris County voted during the early voting period. So, only registered voters who have not voted in this election are eligible to vote on Tuesday.
