College Park opens season with win

College Park, the state’s sixth-ranked Class 5A team, overcame a slow start against Katy Taylor to open the 2008-09 basketball season with a 63-36 home victory.
Forward Allie Messimer paced the Lady Cavaliers with 14 points, while post Nicole Morgan added 12. Point guard Monique Smalls contributed nine points, dished out seven assists and came up with eight of College Park’s 25 steals.
With the score tied 8-8 after the first quarter, the Lady Cavs outscored Taylor 43-21 the next two periods.
“We finally started clicking,” College Park coach Kip Anderson said. “We had a great third quarter. We couldn’t hit a basket in the first quarter. Maybe it was a case of first-game jitters.”
Forward Kelly McClure had six rebounds for College Park. Freshman Lexxus Ward and Priyanka Duvveru produced four steals each.
The Woodlands 54, Humble 42
The Woodlands withstood Humble’s hot shooting touch to rally for a season-opening win at the Wildcats’ gym. The Lady Highlanders trailed 20-10 after the first quarter as Humble shot 73 percent.
“We made some defensive adjustments and stayed patient,” Woodlands coach Dana Bruton said. “We kept working at making a defensive stop and then a score.”
The Lady Highlanders held Humble to 12 points over the next two quarters to take a five-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Forward Amanda Anderson paced The Woodlands with 23 points, including a 13-for-13 performance at the free throw line. Anderson, along with posts Anna Strickland and Sarah Seefeldt, hauled in six rebounds apiece.
Oak Ridge 57, Caney Creek 35
Oak Ridge was flying high with its first win of the season Tuesday. Shayna Clardy led the Lady War Eagles with 17 points, while Joi Munoz led Caney Creek with eight points.
John Cooper 56, Incarnate Word 8
John Cooper School sailed to a breezy 56-8 win over Incarnate Word to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Leading the way for John Cooper were Eleanor Summers with 13 points, Sara Whiteside with 12 points and five assists, Sarah Wiernicki with 10 points, Kristen Heg with seven points and five assists and Brittany Metcalf with eight points and seven assists.
“Our defense really leads the way for us in games,” John Cooper coach Rod Gold said. “Our girls are so well conditioned that other teams can’t handle the constant pressure, which leads to uncontested layups and baskets. The girls just mesh so well together.”
John Cooper will face Lutheran North in the John Cooper Invitational Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
