Post-Ike celebration set for Saturday

For those who still have blue tarps on their roofs, are still fighting with insurance companies, or are otherwise just plain sick of hurricanes, there is a better day coming.
Highlands’ Sterling-White Funeral Home is partnering with the Son Harvest Church of Crosby to host Life After Ike Day , Nov. 15 at 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rosd.
The idea was conceived shortly after Ike made landfall as a means of celebrating the community’s resiliency during those trying weeks in September and October.
“We want to celebrate the fact that we made it and that no loss of life was incurred,” said Son Harvest Pastor Richard Amador.
Several area businesses have come together to donate all materials for the event, from hot dogs and buns to drinks, games and activities – all of which is being offered to the public Saturday free of charge.
“That was the goal of this whole thing. After the storm a lot of families have been experiencing the stress and hardships of recovery,” said event organizer Jeff Moore. “This is just a day to have fun with your family without having to pay a dime.”
Activities available will include face painting, moon walks, a petting zoo and pony rides. Family photographs will also be provided free of charge.
Local musicians Gary Young and Hill Country Jane will provide live music throughout the day.
Moore said that even large corporations such as Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola have stepped forward and made donations to make the event possible. Coca-Cola donated 480 cases of Powerade and cups while Wal-Mart provided hot dog buns.
“It’s really amazing how everyone has come together for a small community” he said.
Festivities for Life After Ike Day will begin at 3 p.m. in the field adjacent to Sterling-White Funeral Home. For more information, call 281-426-3555.
