Free car seat checkup event to be held by DPS
The Texas Department of Public Safety and The Texas Department of Transportation are holding a free car seat checkup event on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. The event will be held at the DPS office in Beaumont and will run from 8 a.m. until noon. This event is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please contact Trooper Davis at 409-924-5453 before Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at 10 a.m.
The sole purpose of this event is to promote the proper use and installation of child safety seats and booster seats. There will be several certified technicians at the event to teach the parents proper car seat installation techniques and allow the parents to practice the techniques.
Texas law requires every person sitting in the front seat to be buckled up. The law also states that all children under 17 years old must be secured with a safety belt or in a child safety seat, whether they are sitting in the front or back seat. Children under 5 years old or less than 36 inches tall must be secured in child safety seats. Violations can result in fines.
The Texas Department of Public Safety encourages parents and caregivers to keep a few safety tips in mind when using a child safety seat or booster seat.
• Secure child in the proper seat for his or her age, height and weight.
• Always check the child safety seat manufacturer’s instruction for proper installation.
• Infant Only or Rear Facing Convertible Car Seats
— Birth to 1 year old, up to 35 lbs
• Front Facing Convertible Car Seats
— 1 to 4 years old, 20 to 40 lbs
• Booster Seats
— 4 to 8 years old or older, 40 to 80-100 lbs
— 4 feet 9 inches (57 inches)
According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars.
Through education, The Texas Department of Public Safety hopes to achieve from each and every motorists on Texas roadways voluntary compliance with the seat belt and child safety seat laws.
