A $10,000 grant from BP powered a Solar Energy Expo at Stewart Elementary School in Kemah.

The day featured a variety of hands on activities including cooking nachos in solar ovens and races with solar cars and solar crabs.

Students also built solar houses and got the opportunity to jump on the district’s new energy bike.

The bicycle is configured with a small motor that will power light bulbs if a student can create enough energy by pedaling fast.

“I want the students to learn that old light bulbs take more energy and burn hotter, while the new light bulbs take less energy and are not as hot,” District Energy Manager Steve Gremillion said.

Teacher Julia Bodenhamer applied for and received the BP grant that funded the Solar Energy Expo.
