Community leaders, elected officials and representatives of the local medical community gathered Tuesday to mark the expansion of health care facilities in The Woodlands.
The ribbon-cutting ceremonies marked the opening of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital Patient Care Tower II, located at 17200 St. Lukes’ Way in The Woodlands. The 82,500-square-foot building adds 57 medical, surgical and intensive-care beds to the facility.
“The new tower continues the legacy of superior patient care and St. Luke’s commitment to The Woodlands community,” said Debra Sukin, chief executive officer of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital. “We are committed to quality health care in The Woodlands.”
Signed by the architectural firm Hammel, Green & Abrahmson, Patient Care Tower II was built in 14 months by W.S. Bellows Construction. The building brings overall capacity at St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital to 148 beds, with more than 266,000 total square feet of space.
“This is a unique, state-of-the-art facility with a more open design,” Sukin said. “Among the high-technology advances featured in the building is telemetry capability for every bed.”
The telemetry capability allows health care professionals to monitor, record and evaluate heart activity for all patients throughout their stay, Sukin said. The technology is an important safeguard for all patients, not just cardiac patients.
Participants in the ribbon-cutting event included David Fine, president and CEO of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, Michael Richmond, St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital board member, U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, the Rev. Randall Trego and The Right Rev. Don Wimberly.
“This is part of an ongoing expansion of new health care facilities and services,” Sukin said. “We’ve kicked it up a notch since our initial opening in 2003, and our plans continue to expand.”
Less than two months ago, groundbreaking for the new St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital was held. Specializing in cardiology and orthopedics, the new facility is slated to open in fall 2009.
“Our goal is to deliver quality health care in the best possible environment,” Sukin said. “As we continue to grow and expand, that commitment to the community never changes.”
