Deadline approaching for federal, state assistance after Ike

Time is running out for residents in Fort Bend and Harris counties to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for federal and state assistance in the wake of damage from Hurricane Ike. Wednesday, Nov. 12 is also the deadline to complete loan applications with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
To register for FEMA Assistance: log on to www.fema.gov or call FEMA’s toll free number, 1-800-621-3362, or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Both numbers are still available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents should register only once; duplicate registrations may cause delays in the delivery of assistance.
Before calling or registering online, residents should have in hand:
The address of the affected property.
A brief description of the damages.
A current mailing address.
Social Security number.
Insurance information including policy numbers.
A phone number and an alternate phone number where they can be reached.
Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repair and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also has a deadline of Nov. 12, and provides low-interest disaster loans to cover the uncompensated losses for personal contents up to $40,000 for both homeowners and renters and up to $200,000 for homeowners for physical damage to their primary residence.
Individuals who require assistance to complete the application can get help from an SBA customer service representative at any Disaster Recovery Center or may call 1-800-659-2955 (TTY 1-800-877-8339).
A new Disaster Recovery Center opened in Sugar Land at The Park at Sugar Creek, 14025 Southwest Freeway, Suite 202. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The center is closed on Sunday. The Rosenberg Disaster Recovery Center was closed due to early voting.
