Local credit union reaches out to Ike victims

Victims of Hurricane Ike still reeling from storm damages are being given an extra boost of assistance thanks to United Community Credit Union (UCCU).

The nonprofit organization is offering four $500 grants to union members who are still working to restore their homes and get their lives together after the storm.

When Marketing Director Janet Colunga and other UCCU employees returned to the area after Ike’s passing, the decision was quickly made to set up some sort of relief benefit.

“We all came back and saw the devastation everywhere. Immediately we thought of our members since the area was hit so hard, said Colunga. “Everyone was on the same page and wanted to help any way they could.”

In order to qualify for the grant, applicants must be UCCU members and write a one-page essay describing the losses they have suffered as a result of the storm. Ike victims who are not members are invited to open an account with UCCU for $5.

The four winners will be announced Nov. 12 and a special check presentation ceremony will be held Nov. 14 at the UCCU branch located at 771 Normandy.

Colunga said that all grant money is being donated by the union itself as a means of solidifying the organization’s commitment to its clients during tough times.

“We had such an outpouring of people saying they needed help. We’re a community credit union and so the areas we serve are very close to our hearts,” she said.

Applicants must either fax their essay to 713-330-9270 or drop it off at any UCCU branch location by Friday, Nov. 7 to be considered.
