Business accepts computers, electronics to recycle

Kingwood Computer is taking a step toward being green as it asks people to dig deep into their closets and drop off non-working computers and electronics. The business will then take the items and recycle them.
“We will not make money off this program; we just want to help people have a place to drop off unused and broken electronics to be recycled,” said Fred Frey, owner of Kingwood Computer. “We are doing this to make sure obsolete computers and equipment are responsibly recycled according to the no landfill and no toxic export policies.”
Kingwood Computer will begin taking the items immediately. Acceptable materials are desktop computers, laptops, servers, CISCO and networking equipment, phone systems, monitors, plasma and LCD displays, storage arrays test equipment, most medical equipment, mainframes, broadcast equipment and cameras, public display announcements, cell phones, SUN workstations and servers, IBM workstations, servers, RISC, printers, cartridges and others.
“We will not accept televisions and only a limited amount of monitors from each person,” Frey said. “Televisions and monitors are heavy and hard to get rid of.”
Items that can be fixed will be donated to various nonprofit organizations in the community. Recycling is free Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. People can also schedule an appointment for pick up for $30.
“We can also ensure that sensitive data on your hard disk is protected by grade data destruction techniques and tools,” he said.
