The city of Deer Park amended the fiscal year 2008-09 budget to reflect the costs incurred in the preparation for and the recovery from Hurricane Ike at its last regular meeting in October. The Deer Park City Council authorized to increase the general fund budget by $3.25 million, making the total amended general fund budget about $38.5 million.

“Based on currently available information, we estimate our total expenditures associated with this storm to be approximately $2,750,000,” Ronald V. Crabtree said in a memo to the council for the Oct. 20 meeting. “While nearly all of these expenses are expected to be reimbursed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency or our insurance coverage through the Texas Municipal League’s Intergovernmental Risk Pool, it is recommended by the staff that we amend the FY 2008-09 Budget to reflect these added expenditure.”

The city manager said the finance department created a separate fund to account for the hurricane-related expenditures and the staff recommends the initial funding for the expenditures come from the reserves of the general fund.

He said when all reimbursements have been received, the fund will be closed and revenues to the fund will be returned to the reserves of the general fund.
