Go hog wild at Lone Star College-North Harris

Every weekend Lone Star College-North Harris takes a detour from its higher learning curriculum for a ride on the wild side.

The college offers a motorcycle safety course to the public for those longing to get out on the open road and feel the wind in their hair. For those who don’t have one yet, motorcycles are provided courtesy of Bob Lunsford’s Northwest Honda and the Texas Department Public Safety.

“For a new rider or an experienced rider this is a good refresher course. But the number one thing is safety. It’s a good way to help them deal with cars that are going to be around them,” said Lorie Qualls, program manager.

Passing the course exempts a person from the riding portion of the state test. When people take the exam at a DPS office, a licensed motorcycle rider must tag along to prove the bike was transported legally or hassle with hauling it to the location.

Part of the school’s Continuing Education Program, the course has been around for more than 25 years and features five hours of classroom and 10 hours on-cycle riding time. It is designed for both the beginning rider and the experienced rider who want to sharpen existing skills and to learn new ones.

Special emphasis is placed on mastering full control of the cycle. Once this skill is developed, the course moves to the advanced physical and mental skills needed to ride the motorcycle safely.

Learning motorcycle safety at the school might even net a person lower insurance rates, Qualls said. Some companies offer a three-year, 10 percent discount following completion of the course.

The cost of the course is $144 and includes the use of motorcycles, all books and materials. Minimum age is 15 years old with parental consent.

All one needs when showing up for the first day of the course is a pen, paper and proof of drivers education if under 18. Then, students should come road-ready the next two days with a helmet, eye protection, long-sleeve cotton shirt that fastens at the wrists, lightweight gloves with fingers, sturdy cotton jeans, sturdy low-heel boots or leather high top shoes.

Fall sessions are offered every weekend from through Dec. 5 with the exception of Thanksgiving week. Each course runs Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Classes have limited enrollment and fill up quickly, so advance registration is strongly encouraged, Qualls said. For more information or to register, call 281-618-5600.
