Richard Noriega

Party: Democratic

Age: 50

Place of residence: Houston

Relevant experience: Past political and military service: Texas House of Representatives (1999-present); Commander, 143rd Infantry Detachment; lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army National Guard where I served as deputy garrison commander of the KMTC training facility in Kabul, Afghanistan, after 9/11; incident commander, George R. Brown Houston Katrina Shelter Relief Effort, provided shelter, health care and job placement to thousands of Louisiana hurricane evacuees. Current civic involvement: Catholic Charities; Houston Holocaust Museum; UH Alumni life member; Christ Church Cathedral; Harvard Alumni; LULAC Council 402; VFW; American Legion; U.S. Army Infantry Assoc., Tejano Democrats; East End Chamber of Commerce and life member TRA.

No. 1 issue you are running on: Our health care system costs too much and covers too few. John Cornyn has stood in the way of reform by voting against children’s health insurance six times and blocking lower priced drugs for our seniors. Under Cornyn's watch family premiums have gone up 80 percent. I have a plan to make sure all Texans have access to quality affordable health care. I will fight to extend coverage to all Texas children, create tax incentives for small businesses that provide health insurance, connect Texans with affordable plans and keep costs down by supporting increased transparency with regard to premiums and physician ratings.

Yvonne Adams Schick

Party: Libertarian

Age: 60

Place of residence: Hill Country near Austin

Relevant experience: Grassroots lobbying for tax reform

No. 1 issue you are running on: The economy. Texans feel betrayed. They can no longer trust either of the major parties to defend the Constitution, to stand on the principles of fairness and free markets that made our country great, or even to use common sense. The economy can be restored but only if we return to those basics and stop bailouts for those who have used poor business judgments at best and are possibly guilty of criminal fraud; severely cut government spending including putting an end to nation-building wars; lower taxes; and reform the monetary system by returning the control of printing money to the federal government and not the Federal Reserve.

Kent Hargett

Party: Democratic

Age: 51

Place of residence: West Montgomery County

Relevant experience: Staff position in a conservative think tank in the Reagan Administration. Political activism concerning counter-terrorism training and Iran Democracy Movements.

No. 1 issue you are running on: National security is my primary issue. We need a national security doctrine designed to meet the current dangers. This means facing the fact that Al Qaeda is Saudi Arabian in origin, and that there is no prospect of strategic victory against Al Qaeda without shutting down its resource base, the Wahabbi movement. The Wahabbi movement is the official religion of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Republican leaders warn of terrorists following us home from Iraq, yet they possess no stomach to follow Al Qaeda home to Saudi Arabia. The Bush-Saudi alliance prevents Republican leaders from being decisive about American national security. Our national security policy should be focused on what happens here, not on occupying Islamic lands, while ignoring the worst of terrorism supporting states, Saudi Arabia. This means national security, not imperial security.

barbara cargill

Position: State Board of Education District 8

Age: 48

Place of residence: The Woodlands

Relevant experience: My background as a classroom science teacher, my current work as director of WOW! Science Camp and my role as mom to three sons enrolled in public school is very relevant to my role on the SBOE. Four years on the board have given me valuable experience as I work to enrich our students’ education. Also, serving on the PTA board and volunteering with the youth at church help me to stay in touch with the needs of children. I understand the challenges facing teachers, parents and students as I strive to ensure educational quality and success for our children.

No. 1 issue you are running on: As a conservative state board member I will continue to vote for quality, error-free textbooks that help teachers guide students toward academic success. The board votes on revisions to the state curriculum standards to make them more clear, concise and measurable. As a conservative board member I will continue to vote for standards that offer stronger grammar, reading and writing instruction, standards that include the foundational elements of mathematics, and standards that foster patriotism and the free-enterprise system. Having strong curriculum standards leads to academic rigor that will better prepare students for college or the workplace.

Arlan Foster

Party: Democratic

Age: 56

Place of residence: Dayton

Relevant experience: I have been serving and defending the public for over 35 years to include three tours in Vietnam, 19 years as a Texas peace officer and 10 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. I have lobbied in Austin and D.C. ,testified on several pieces of legislation and as the president of the Correctional Employees Union I am accustomed to representing people. I serve on the Corrections United Congressional Steering Committee in D.C. , the steering committee for Independent Texans, and am a member of the Texas Democratic Party.

No. 1 issue you are running on: Cleaning up the corruption, stopping the Trans Texas Corridor. The job description is in the job title - “representive.” I will do the will of the people not the ultra-rich lobbyists. I have not taken a dime from them and I’m not afraid to say no to Rick Perry or Tom Craddick.

Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden

Party: Republican

Age: 37

Place of residence: Splendora

Relevant experience: I am blessed to be one of those people who has always known exactly what he wanted to do with his life. I have prepared to be the constable of Precinct 4 for over 20 years. Over the last 18 years, I have gained necessary experience in a variety of disciplines in law enforcement. I have served as deputy constable, as an investigator and have worked in the District Court. I have advanced certifications in law enforcement. I come from a family with a tradition of public service.

No. 1 issue you are running on: A proactive deployment to prevent crime is what the citizens need and expect. Criminals do not commit crimes where the police are. To protect and serve the citizens of Precinct 4, we have to patrol, police and guard their homes while they are at work and asleep - 24/7 coverage. People of Precinct 4 need to feel safe. I want them to have confidence that the car slowly cruising their neighborhood late at night is a Precinct 4 constable. The mission refocus will be to one of protecting and serving.

Cole lynn bishop

Party: Democratic

Age: 23

Place of residence: Splendora

Relevant experience: I have three years at the Precinct 4 Constable Deputy working in all aspects of the Constable’s Office serving warrants and civil papers, and working criminal investigations. I was worked in uniform patrol; criminal interdiction; undercover narcotics and involved in arrests and prosecutions of hard core criminals. I have 70 college hours towards by criminal justice degree. I am a graduate of New Caney High School and of the Houston Community College Police Academy. I was voted “top gun” at the police academy in 2005.

No. 1 issue you are running on: I want to continue the fight against the illegal drugs flowing into our community threatening the health and well-being of the youth in our county. The Pct. 4 Constables Office has a professional K-9 organization as good as any I have seen. Keeping it in operation would be one of my first priorities. Pursuit of hard core criminals who have taken up refuge in Montgomery County will be another primary objective.
