Coach’s wife enjoying Tigers’ success

Kristi Svoboda finds works of art on post-its all around her house. Some might represent sweeps and quarterback draws, while others could be post patterns and options.

Visually, they aren’t much for the Tomball elementary school art teacher to see, but the simple drawings that her husband, Klein Collins football coach Drew Svoboda, leaves around the house prove their artistic value when they come to life each weekend.

“He can’t draw, but he can draw up plays,” Kristi said.

The Svobodas have been married for eight years, and Kristi understands her husband’s dedication to the game and the nearly 90 hours per week he works during the season.

She attends almost all of the games, sitting with Drew’s mother, Debbie Svoboda, and her mother, Glenda Benoit.

It’s especially rewarding after a huge win like last Friday’s 14-7 upset of previously-undefeated Klein Oak at Klein Memorial Stadium.

"It was an awesome win,” Kristi said. “This was the most exciting game so far. He's worked so hard. He played football, he has climbed the totem pole of coaching and I knew he'd get this job the second he applied."

Kristi said her husband’s emotions don’t change based on the team’s results. She’s become good friends with assistant coaches’ wives through coaches parties and get-togethers throughout the season.

Drew Svoboda, 31, is one of the area’s youngest head coaches. He has the Tigers (5-1, 3-1) in a four-way tie for first place in District 13 along with Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Spring Westfield.

He credits the support of Kristi, 30, for his success on the field.

“She understands the commitment required to do the job,” Drew said. “This is not a normal job, not normal hours. She understands everything that goes along with it.”

The couple met about 12 years ago at Stephen F. Austin University when Drew was playing for the Lumberjacks. Kristi, a Houston native, met Drew, who grew up in Kingwood and Tomball, through a mutual friend. They dated all through college and married shortly thereafter.

She knew, even in college, that Drew would become a successful football coach. He worked as a coordinator at Klein Collins and Conroe Oak Ridge before becoming the Tigers’ boss this season.

"I try to make it the least amount of stress as much as I possibly can,” Kristi said. “We don't talk about football all the time. Just because he loves it so much, I love it also. I support him because he's doing what he should be doing."

Drew was very proud of his team’s victory but seemed even prouder to share the special moment with his family.

"It's great to have their support,” he said. To have my wife come to the game (is great). It's more than just a game, it's our life and to have her come experience it with me, it's great to have her here. It means a lot, and she knows that."
