A doggone good time

With tails wagging, dogs at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter greeted some special visitors Friday morning.
More than 40 fifth- and sixth-graders from The Woodlands Preparatory School descended upon the facility to provide nearly $2,000 in pet supplies and hundreds of dollars in monetary donations as well as spend time with the shelter animals housed there since Hurricane Ike.
“We like to do volunteer work once or twice a year,” said Kelly Lebig, teacher and field trip organizer. “We did a Hurricane Ike donation drive, so we figured we would come to the shelter because there were so many animals displaced.
“We wanted students to understand why they were donating.”
Students rotated between dog walking, grooming and cat socialization, animal Halloween costumes and a talk to learn about the shelter.
“It’s good for the animals,” said sixth-grader Brahm Walter, 11. “It feels good helping out all the dogs.”
Walter will be back at the shelter now that he is signed up as a volunteer.
Fifth-grader Colin Murphy, 10, enjoyed grooming the dogs the best, he said.
“Some of them were injured and we needed to help them to stay alive and healthy,” he said. “I was surprised how much we collected. It was only two grades.”
The donation pile was stacked in front of the shelter and included bags of food, dog bones, Frisbees, towels, dog outfits, toys and other items.
The Montgomery County Animal Shelter takes in approximately 2,000 animals a month.
The shelter relies on volunteers, said Debbie Haas, MCAS volunteer team leader.
“The shelter has a tight budget and can use all the supplies we can get,” she said. “One of the goals for us as volunteers is to spread the word about the needs for the shelter. It’s so good to see young people getting the word and spreading the word.”

" Kudos to these wonderful kids and teachers for all the work and effort they've put into helping these shelter animals who have been tragically displaced after the Hurricane. I'm so proud of them all and wish more adults in our society would take a lesson from the love and generosity these kids and their teachers display in their generous and selfless gifts of charity and tiime. You kids are the best!!! "
