ATV accident claims life of driver

A Crosby man was killed over the weekend while riding with his children in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

Paramedics were called to the scene at the 16600 block of Forest Trail in Channelview, Oct. 24 following up on a report of an ATV accident.

According to Harris County Sheriff’s deputies, Howard Lewis Bear, 33, was operating the vehicle along with his two children.

Bear’s 5-year-old son was sitting in front of him and his 9-year-old daughter was riding behind him at the time of the incident, police said.

Bear and both children were ejected from the ATV after the driver swerved and struck a concrete median. None of the passengers were wearing helmets.

Bear was taken via Life Flight to Memorial Hermann hospital where he died from severe head injuries. His son and daughter were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and were later released.

Police advise that anyone operating an ATV wear a helmet to reduce the chance of a life-threatening injury.

“I think that even just one helmet could have done nothing but helped in this situation,” said Deputy David Crain. “We strongly recommend their use while operating ATVs, motorcycles or similar motor vehicles.”

According to statistics compiled from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) there have been 135 reported deaths from ATV accidents in Texas from 2003-2006.
