Lady Bears 3rd; Magnolia ties for crown

Updated: 10.28.08
Montgomery celebrated Senior Night with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Waller that secured the Lady Bears a share of third place in the District 18-4A standings.

Montgomery finished the regular season tied with Huntsville at 9-5. Brenham defeated the Lady Hornets 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 Tuesday night.

Montgomery (28-13) and Huntsville (23-15) will meet in a one-game playoff match Friday tentatively slated for 6 p.m. at Willis.

The winner advances to the Class 4A bi-district round against San Marcos, the runner-up of District 17-4A. The loser faces Buda Hayes, the undefeated 17-4A champion.

“There is a difference playing the unbeaten district champion instead of the second place team,” Montgomery coach Terri Wade said, stating her reason for a playoff instead of settling for a coin flip.

Against Waller, Lizzy Bache had nine kills for the Lady Bears, while Caitlin Ogletree contributed 13 assists and Lauren Pavloske produced 12 digs.

Kaylee Nemeth had four blocks for Montgomery.

Kelli Stewart’s 11 kills put her over 500 for the season as the Lady Bulldogs swept Willis in three games and locked down the District 18-4A co-championship on Senior Night.

Magnolia High’s 25-14, 25-10, 25-22 win secured a 13-1 district record, the same as Brenham. Although the Lady Bulldogs won a coin flip Tuesday for the top seed, head coach Terri Johnson opted to enter the 4A state playoffs as the second seed from 18-4A.

Magnolia High is tentatively scheduled to play Del Valle Tuesday at a site and time to be determine.

Stewart’s 11 kills gave her 504 for the regular season. Paige Holland had 27 assists for the Lady Bulldogs.

Covenant Christian moved to within one match of the TAPPS Class 2A state volleyball tournament Tuesday with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-22 area round triumph over Shiner St. Paul at Bellville.

Led by Kelly Wiesmann’s 16 kills and Jordan Meza’s 27 digs, the 31-2 Lady Cougars advance to the Regional match at Concordia Lutheran in Tomball at noon Saturday where they face the winner of McKinney Christian Academy and San Antonio Rainbow Hills.

“The girls played very good, solid team volleyball,” Covenant coach Debbie Abbott said. “They came out firing and I was proud of them.”

Michelle Walker (13 assists, 4 digs) set the tone when she opened the match by serving the Lady Cougars to a 10-point run. Teammate Katelyn Holm joined Kelly Weismann at the night for 15 kills.

Dayna Wiesmann contributed 21 assists, seven kills, seven digs and four blocks.

Splendora swept Huffman, 25-21, 25-22, 21-16 in District 22-3A play to secure a berth in the state playoffs.

The Ladycats finished the regular season at 16-11 with an 8-4 district record. They are tied for second place with Liberty behind unbeaten Tarkington.

A playoff match between Splendora and Liberty is expected to take place.

Courtney Barron led the Ladycats with nine kills, while Shauna McClure had 18 digs.
