Foundation salutes students with 13th annual golf tournament

Published: 10.14.08
The theme for the 13th annual San Jacinto College Foundation Golf Tournament is “Celebrating Our Students.”

Due to the financial burden caused by Hurricane Ike, all proceeds from this year’s tournament will be dedicated to Spring 2009 student scholarships.

“Many of our students have lost everything and are struggling to stay in school,” said Susan Arscott, San Jacinto College’s vice president of resource development. The Foundation is currently addressing students’ immediate needs by providing emergency funds to replace their damaged textbooks and anticipates continuing to help for the next year. “Our goal is to help our students stay enrolled because many of them will not have the means of paying for their tuition, let alone books and supplies,” added Arscott.

The tournament will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Battleground Golf Course, located at 1600 Georgia in Deer Park. The first round will tee off at 7:15 a.m., with registration and a continental breakfast at 6:15 a.m. The second round will begin at 12:45 p.m., with registration at 11:30 a.m.

An auction and reception will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. New York Yankees pitcher and San Jacinto College alumnus Andy Pettitte serve as the guest host at the auction and reception.

Pettitte, a Deer Park resident, attended San Jacinto College, where he excelled as a pitcher for the baseball team before beginning his professional career. The San Jacinto College Foundation designated a $100,000 scholarship in Pettitte’s honor because of the commitment he made to the Foundation through his efforts with the annual golf tournament.

For the 2007-08 academic year, the Foundation has awarded and helped facilitate $951,040 in scholarships, and the Foundation’s annual golf tournament has raised over $892,405 since the first tournament in 1996.

The format for each round of the golf tournament will be Florida Scramble consisting of four-person teams, regardless of handicap. Two flights will be determined after all scores are submitted to the scorer’s table. The average score will be the break point for the division of the two flights. Prizes will be the same for both flights. Pro shop gift certificates for the first three places include: first place, $100 for each team member; second place, $75 for each team member; third place, $50 for each team member.

Lunch and an awards ceremony will follow the first round. Afternoon players should plan to come early for lunch, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be an awards presentation after the second round.
