Beatification committee urges community to save electronics

As families and businesses around the community continue cleaning up after Hurricane Ike, the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification Committee is encouraging the community to recycle their electronics Nov. 15.
In a partnership with Sony and Waste Management, the committee is planning an electronic waste recycling day at the Humble Civic Center to collect electronics that are no longer needed and make sure they are disposed of properly.
“If anyone has electronic damage from the hurricane or has electronics, we are encouraging them to wait and bring them Nov. 15 and recycle them,” Lisa Doughty, public relations manager for Waste Management and member of the committee, said.
Every vehicle will be allowed to bring up to five pieces of electronic equipment to recycle. They will not be accepting refrigerators, stoves or dishwashers at this particular e-waste recycling event because the chlorofluorocarbons have to be removed from the item before it can be recycled and the committee will not being doing this process.
“Our main point with this electronic recycling event is to promote America Recycles Day and make sure electronics are being recycled, which helps our environment,” Doughty said. “We still need a few volunteers so we are asking anyone who wishes to get involved to come and join us.”
Besides discussing the upcoming recycling day, the committee submitted the proposal for their program of work for 2009 at their monthly meeting Oct. 13.
The program of work entails goals the Beautification Committee plans to work on and complete the next year for the betterment of the community.
The program of work for 2009 includes the following:
Improve the overall beauty of the community through organized clean-up days and individual beautification projects
Work within the business community to promote self-regulated sign laws
Educate the public on the negative effects that panhandlers and street vendors have on the community
Educate the community on the importance of recycling
Help establish an ongoing recycling program
Work with other beautification committees on projects
