Dealer to give away car during Lee-Sterling football game
By JOSH HARDWICK
If the age-old Ganders - Rangers rivalry isn’t enough to fill seats at Friday night’s game between Baytown’s Lee and Sterling high schools, then perhaps the possibility of winning a car will do the trick.
The names of juniors or seniors with perfect attendance since September, 2007, will be placed in a drawing during the Friday game to win a 2009 Kia Rio LX courtesy of Community Kia in Baytown.
This will be the fourth year that Community Kia has given away a car for perfect attendance, a program that was started by owner Roger Elswick in hopes of encouraging more students to make it to class.
Elswick said he considers education as a life-changing gift that can open up great opportunities to those who take advantage of it.
“Studies indicate that students who attend school regularly do better in the classroom,” he said. “In the past two years we have had 167 students with perfect attendance participate in the drawing. I expect that number to continue to climb.”
With the opening of Goose Creek Memorial High School this fall, Elswick said he plans to give away two cars for next year’s drawing.
In 2009 Barbers Hill High School will be paired with Goose Creek Memorial in the drawing for a Scion XD, while Lee and Sterling High Schools will be drawing for a Kia Rio.
The total value of the vehicles, including registration fees to be paid by the dealership, is $32,000.
The Lee-Sterling game is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Stallworth Stadium. The drawing for perfect attendance will take place during halftime.
District administrators said they will employ extra security precautions at the game – including bag checks - to ensure that an otherwise fun and healthy rivalry doesn’t get out of hand.
“I am very proud of our Goose Creek students and I expect them to display good sportsmanship at all times and to represent their schools in a dignified, responsible manner,” said GCCISD Superintendent Barbara Sultis.
Lee fans are asked to park in the west parking lot behind the press box, while Sterling fans should park in the east lot behind the visitor’s stands.
Following the game, those exiting from the west parking lot will be directed west on Archer Road to North Main Street.
Traffic exiting the east lot onto Archer Road will be directed down Sjolander Road to Interstate 10, while those who exit onto Sjolander Road from the east lot will be directed south on Sjolander.
The Harris County Constable’s Office will direct the flow of traffic at the four-way stop at Cedar Bayou- Lynchburg and Sjolander roads.
Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.
