A double dose of championships is getting to be a habit with Clear Lake’s water polo teams.

The Falcons won the boy’s and girl’s titles of last week’s 13th Annual Wyatt Earp Showdown tournament held at Clear Springs.

Clear Lake took the girl’s crown with a 12-9 win over Baytown Sterling, its chief foe this season in tournament play.

The Lake boys had to come from behind to edge Baytown Sterling 13-12.

The girl’s win more than pleased Clear Lake coach Tom Landgraf.

“This was our best game of the season,” Landgraf said. “We played well at both lends of the pool. Our press defense was exceptional.

“Samantha Krouse was outstanding in the goal. Samantha is only a sophomore but looked like a four-year veteran.”

Landgraf also cited co-captain Danielle Garcia for her effort in getting five goals and six steals in the championships game.

“Danielle came to play tonight,” he said. Garcia scored 16 goals in the tournament. Taylor Barnett stayed close with 15 goals.

The Lady Falcons led all the way, from 3-2 after one period to 9-3 heading into the fourth. Sterling began a comeback but Lake controlled the action until the end.

Clear Lake’s girls remain perfect, with a 16-0 record.

In tourney play, the Lake girls defeated St. Agnes 17-5, Clear Springs 18-4 and Clear Creek in the semifinals, 16-5.

In the boy’s final, the Falcons trailed most of the game. Sterling led 8-4 early in the third period and 10-8 heading into the fourth.

But Falcon Will Kolodgie tied the game at 12 with 1:27 left and Andrew McDonald nailed the game winner with only 37 seconds left.

“This was a tremendous comeback against a team as strong as Sterling’s boys,” Landgraf said. “I wasn’t pleased with out execution for most of the game and Sterling took advantage of our mistakes to run up a nice lead, but these guys never quit.”

Landgraf lauded the entire team for the comeback, especially Andrew MacDonald.

“(Andrew) was exceptional,” Landgraf said. “He scored six goals and had five or six steals. He didn’t want to lose this game.” McDonald had 14 goals in the tournament.

The Lake boys are undefeated with a perfect 17-0 record.

In tournament play the boys edged Strake Jesuit 8-7. Then they went on to whip Clear Springs 15-0 and Clear Creek in the semifinals by a 9-3 count.

The region tournament will be held at Clear Springs Oct. 17-18. The state water polo tournament will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the University of Texas Natatorium in Austin.
