Sugar Land new home for Dragon Boat Regatta
By AUDREY M. MARKS
For the first time in five years the Gulf Coat International Dragon Boat Regatta will be held in Sugar Land instead of the Bay Area.
The yearly races had previously called Pasadena Lake home, but because of Hurricane Ike the event Oct. 18-19 will be held on Brook’s Lake by the Fluor Corporation, Michelle Shen-O’Brien
Executive director of the Texas Dragon Boat Association who hosts the event.
Teams of 20 paddlers compete in long and narrow boats complete with decorative Chinese dragon heads
The races start at 8:30 a.m. and last until 4:30 p.m. each day. The event is free and open to the public.
But there will be more than just boat races at the regatta. Shen-O’Brien said the event will also feature Asian arts, cultural performances, and the usual usual festival food and vendors
“Our mission and goal is to promote traditions and raise awareness of Asian-American culture through dragon boating,” Shen-O’Brien said.
Additionally the regatta focuses on breast cancer survivors.
“The October regatta is our signature event for breast cancer survivors,” she said.
Teams from Vancouver, Canada, Lafayette, La., and a local group from Houston will compete with teams made of breast cancer survivors or patients currently in treatment.
More than 40 teams of local Houston corporations, community groups, youth teams from schools and breast cancer survivor teams have signed up to compete.
“We’re very grateful to be in Sugar Land,” Shen-O’Brien said. “Our plans are to bring the regatta to [the community] for the next couple years.”
