Hurricane delayed, but did not stop, Tarkington Roundup

Updated: 10.14.08
The Tarkington Community will celebrate the sixth annual Tarkington Roundup on Saturday, October 18, 2008, in front of Tarkington Middle School on FM 163 in Liberty County.

Activities will begin at 10 a.m. including a new addition to the festivities, “Tarkington’s Got Talent,” a talent competition to showcase the talent in our community.

The “Tarkington’s Got Talent” event is sponsored by the Tarkington Student Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides funding to all graduating Tarkington students who pursue any form of post-secondary education.

The competition will include age categories for primary school, intermediate school, middle school, high school, and beyond.

All are welcome — the old and young, individuals and groups, churches and other organizations. There will be a $25 entry fee for each performer or group.

Written entry forms are available from Dorothy McCreight at Tarkington High School or can be printed from the Tarkington I.S.D. website – www.tarkington.isd.esc4.net, click on “Groups” and then “Tarkington Student Foundation.”

Trophies will be given for individual age categories. Top winners in each group will advance to a final performance and compete for cash prizes.

The talent show is the kick-off fundraising event for the Foundation and it looks forward to providing more information at the roundup about this worthy cause.

In addition to the talent show, there will be music from the high school band, middle school band and the school choirs. Award presentations will also be a part of the day’s festivities.

The Fall Festival, sponsored by Project Graduation, will begin at 10 a.m. in the grassy area at the entrance to the middle school. There will be food, fun and games for children of all ages.

The Tarkington Community Library will have a book fair with good bargains on books. The library will also sponsor craft vendors and political candidates who will have booths open during the same time period. Interested vendors and candidates should contact Ruth Stetson at 281-592-6749.

The Tarkington Prairie Historical Society will display historical pictures, artifacts and documents during the day. The society will also be selling official histories of Tarkington schools, Christmas ornaments depicting the old school buildings, calendars with historic pictures and written stories of local characters and folklore.

All former students, teachers, administrators, community members, and anyone with an interest in Tarkington are invited to attend this fun-filled day of activities, nostalgia and reunion as Tarkington celebrates its past, present and future.

Tarkington Middle School is located seven miles south of Cleveland Texas. Take SH 321/105 south from Cleveland for five miles. Go one-half mile past the SH 105 split with SH 321. Turn left onto FM 163. Tarkington Middle School is located two miles on the left.
