Barktoberfest to invade Town Center
By JENNIFER SUMMER
Cheeks will be slobbering wet as guests participate in the kissing contest featuring dogs and their human best friends at the second annual Barktoberfest Oct. 4.
“We are looking for the best licker,” Jamie Bakke of Pampered Paws Boutique laughed.
Between doggie ice cream, treats and a variety of different activities, Kingwood Town Center will be filled with pets, owners and vendors for a fun-filled afternoon.
“Last year was our first year and it was very successful, so we are excited to have this event again,” Jennifer Tran with Urban Paws Magazine said. “Proceeds from the event will be given out to an area rescue/adoption group whose name is pulled out of a drawing at the end of the event.”
Several area rescue groups like Twyla’s Friends and Animals Always Believe in You were invited and besides having the chance to receive money, they will be informing guests what their group is about and what their goals are.
The unique pet-friendly event was founded last year by Bakke and Tran and the duo plan to bring even more excitement and entertainment to the table this year.
They are planning to block off the streets in Town Center and have more vendors and activities spread throughout Town Center Park, and they already have more than 25 pure breed rescue groups planning to attend.
Besides the entertainment for dogs and kids, for the first time there will be a first-aid/CPR course going on throughout the day.
“We are going to have a costume contest for the dogs, kissing contest, a pet photographer will be on hand, a kid’s zone with face painting and spin art along with the Houston Frisbee Dogs performing all afternoon. It will be fun for everyone,” Tran said.
Guests will enjoy a pie eating contest aptly titled the “Woof it Down” pie eating contest and celebrity guest emcee Jan Glenn from “Wild About Houston.”
There will be several gift baskets to raffle and a silent auction to help raise proceeds for the participating rescue groups and shelters.
“We are excited about Barktoberfest because we have more vendors and it will be much larger than it was last year,” Bakke said. “The first 100 guests to the event will receive a goodie bag chock full of specialty gifts and surprises.”
Dreyer’s Ice Cream will pass out cool treats for humans and a dog-safe kind of ice cream while the Spay and Neuter Assistance Program will have a presentation about the importance of spaying or neutering animals and answer any questions.
Barktoberfest will also offer microchipping with a universal ISO chip at a discounted price with a coupon found on the event’s program.
The event is still in need of volunteers and organizers invite anyone who is interested to join in the fun and help an event that is raising money for a good cause.“Our main goal with Barktoberfest is to educate the community about responsible pet ownership and the importance of adoption,” Tran said. “We encourage anyone to come out whether they have pets or not for a fun afternoon.”
