The Lady Pirates had a tough week as they competed all but one day. But they are driven with the need to win as they only have one win in district. With the regular season winding down, the Lady Pirates have to push all distractions to the side and play volleyball.
The Lady Pirates’ first focus was set on the Lady Panthers of Liberty, and as usual for the Lady Pirates, things did not go right from the beginning. A game that was supposed to begin at 7 p.m. did not actually begin until 8:45 p.m. due to only having one official present.
“It was a big mess,” Coach Trevino said.
Despite the game beginning late, the Lady Pirates fought tough but fell to the Lady Panthers in four matches: 25-16, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-18.
“The girls were mentally drained by the fourth game. Liberty executed their offense and we did not,” Coach Trevino said.
The Lady Pirates were led by Erica Bell with seven kills followed by Hailey Lehmann and Brianna Schlagel both with three kills each. Captain Jodie Chreene had eight digs, Jennifer Swan and Chincia Caddie both had seven assists with Brittani Cruz’ monster 12 blocks.
The loss to Liberty had to be erased quickly because the Lady Pirates had to play the following night against Splendora, one of the top teams in the district.
The Lady Pirates played very flat as if they had given their all the previous night and Splendora capitalized on their play, winning in three matches 25-11, 25-13 and 25-22.
The Lady Pirates’ defensive specialist and Captain Jodie Chreene couldn’t pull her teammates together to compete until the third match but by then Splendora had too much momentum.
“We really played bad. We are going to have to refocus and go back to the basics,” Coach Trevino said.
The Lady Pirates were led by Jodie Chreene with three digs and one ace along with Erica Bell who had three blocks and Chincia Caddie and Hailey Lehmann with two kills each.
The Lady Pirates (1-5) closed out their tough week by going to Coldspring, hoping to spoil homecoming parties for the Lady Trojans who are desperate for a win in district.
The Lady Pirates began the game without emotion and making too many mistakes, which is uncommon for them. The leader, and one of the district’s best, Jodie Chreene played frustrated and even though she continued to shine because of her individual talent, her presence on the court to the Lady Pirates seem distant.
“Everyone is not having fun anymore and I am a little frustrated. Things have been difficult since the hurricane. We are not communicating as much and we are standing straight up. Also, not having a gym hurts but we will do better next week,” Chreene said.
The Lady Pirates have many obstacles to get over going into the second half of the season 1-6, but during these times they will have to come together even more. They must figure out how they want to end their season, with regrets and finger-pointing or by overcoming these obstacles and getting back to being a great team.
The Lady Pirates played Tuesday against Huffman but due to the paper’s delivery schedule, the results will be in next week’s paper. On Friday, the Lady Pirates will play against Splendora.
