Hurricane Ike has come and gone doing lots of damage to Liberty County, including putting Bobcat stadium out of commission for possibly the rest of the season. But none of that hurt the spirits of Hull-Daisetta as they traveled to Warren to play the Warriors last Friday night.
In a game put together by Bobcat head coach Joe Allen Slack at the last minute to get one last non-district game in before district play starts it was the Bobcats having their way with 2-A Warren 32-6.
"We came out rusty early on", said Slack, "but once we got some of the rust out things started to click".
Senior running back Aaron Cook once again turned in another big performance for the Bobcats by rushing for 123-yards on 15-carries and two touchdowns. Cook has now rushed for 465-yards on the season. He is averaging 9.3 yards a carry with five touchdowns.
It was Cook who got Hull-Daisetta on the board first by scoring from 11-yards out with 5:31 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcats then used some trickery to lead to its next score. Quarterback Sam Elliott hit Jacob Fregia who then pitched to Cook for a 47-yard gain on the hook-and-lateral to put Hull-Daisetta deep into Warren territory. A couple of plays later it was Elliott sneaking in from a yard out. Derrick Roberts who was a perfect three-for three on PAT kicks made it 14-0 early on in the second quarter.
"We used a little trickery for the second score, but you have to keep the defense honest", said Slack.
Hull-Daisetta (2-1) then increased their lead to 22-0 just before the close of the first half as De'Andre Fountain scored from three yards out on a reverse.
Cook then made it 29-0 midway through the third quarter by finding pay dirt from 55-yards out.
The Warriors would get their only score of the game in the third quarter by blocking a punt and returning it for a score.
"We played well on the defensive side of the ball and if not for the blocked punt for a score we would have pitched a shutout", added Slack.
Warren finished the game with 223-yards of offense.
The final points of the game came in the final quarter as Roberts booted a 32-yard field goal. "Derrick hit the kick well and it had plenty of distance", said Slack.
For the game the Bobcats finished with 356-yards of total offense. Elliott finished the night with 142-yards passing on an efficient seven of nine passing. Elliott has thrown for 344-yards on the season with three touchdowns. The leading receiver on the night was Fregia with three receptions for 60-yards. Kevin Thompson added 46-yards on seven carries.
Thompson was also the leading tackler with seven tackles, three of those for a loss. Keith Gilmore had two tackles for losses.
"When we scrimmaged them in August we pretty much did what we wanted and tonight they played a lot harder and did not make it as easy as the score would indicate", added Slack.
The Bobcats, who are working with a couple of schools on using their stadium, will host Burkeville this week to open district play. Depending on where Hull-Daisetta plays will determine if the game will be played Friday or Saturday.
