Only days left to apply for disaster food stamps and disaster unemployment
The deadline to apply for disaster food stamps or for disaster unemployment benefits is October 15. People who apply for disaster food stamps before this deadline go through a simplified application. In addition, income and resource requirements are different than regular food stamps requirements. Detailed requirements are available on the Texas Human Health and Human Services website, http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/.
If you have only applied for disaster food stamps but now want to continue receiving food stamps after October 2008, you will have to reapply through a new application with a more extensive verifications process. To apply for Hurricane Ike disaster food stamps, you must visit an HHSC Benefits Office or download an application, fill it out and take it with you to the benefits office before October 15. You can also apply online at www.yourtexasbenefits.com, or by calling 2-1-1 or 1-877-541-7905. People who already receive food stamps do not need to reapply or go to a benefits office.
Special disaster unemployment benefits are available to people who lost work because of Hurricane Ike, even if they were self-employed or did not have enough work history to be eligible for regular unemployment benefits. The Disaster Unemployment Program also has an application deadline by October 15, 2008. You can file an application by calling 281-983-1100 in Houston, or 1-800-999-6631 or by visiting www.texasworkforce.org.
People who need disaster food stamps must file applications through HHSC and are encouraged to visit the state web site to learn more about eligibility requirements; disaster unemployment applications must go through the Texas Workforce Commission.
Lone Star Legal Aid is available for assistance with application denials and appeals. If you are denied food stamps or unemployment benefits, call Lone Star Legal Aid, 713-652-0077 or 800-733-8394.
About Lone Star Legal Aid’s Hurricane Ike Relief
As humanitarian efforts along the Gulf Coast mobilized for Hurricane Ike, Lone Star Legal Aid immediately responded by activating its toll-free Hurricane Hotline to provide short and long-term free disaster recovery legal help. Prior to Ike, Lone Star Legal Aid had closed more than 10,000 hurricane cases and provided general legal information to over 50,000 people directly affected by Katrina and Rita.
In the first month after Ike, Lone Star Legal Aid distributed more than 50,000 English, Spanish and Vietnamese disaster relief legal information packets. So far, the LSLA team has traveled thousands of miles across the state, advising and helping Texans wherever possible through mobile offices staffed by Lone Star disaster experts at FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), through the Hurricane Hotline, as well as in partnerships and public meetings at local community organizations, churches and shelters for the many thousands with critical legal needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

My wife called about the food stamps and was told that they would call back.I guess since the deadline is the 13'th we get nothing from that either.
Disaster Relief my butt !!
Well I'm back to work and nobody was hurt during the storm. I hope every one has better luck getting help than we did .
I would like to thank the Linemen for fixing all the damaged power lines and the people at PCT 3 San Jacinto and the Bear Creek F.D. for the water and ice. They really helped us survive the storm. "
