LSC-M students won’t have to make up lost days

Lone Star College System students will not have to make up any class hours lost due to Hurricane Ike’s lingering effects.

All five LSCS colleges, six centers and LSC-University Center are open starting today. LSC-North Harris, the last campus to open, received power Thursday and opened this morning.

“They’re not going to extend the semester,” said Steve Lestarjette, LSCS associate vice chancellor of public affairs. “Individual instructors will work to cover the same amount of work by the end of the semester.”

Students enrolled in online classes but without electricity at home should utilize computer facilities at other LSCS colleges or at local public facilities, according to www.lonestar.edu. They also need to advise instructors of any circumstances due to Ike.

The LSC-Online Help Desk and Office of Technology Services Help Desk extended their hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week through Oct. 5, according to www.lonestar.edu.

While all LSCS facilities are up and running, the LSC-Tomball library is not. Due to water damage the facility will remain closed for several more weeks. Reference and tutoring services are available in N103.

“There was a little bit of water damage in there and they are in the process of cleaning it out,” said Jamie White, LSC-Tomball community relations director. “They pretty much set up a temporary facility.

“We’re still doing everything we do for students, but it’s just in a different facility.”

All LSC locations in the library system set Sept 12 through Oct. 1 as Hurricane Ike holidays, according to www.lonestar.edu. There will be no fines or fees during those dates for late materials.

The LSCS semester began Aug. 25. All facilities closed down the afternoon of Sept. 11 in preparation of Ike. Most campuses remained closed until Monday due to a loss of electricity and damaged facilities, but campuses opened throughout the week as electricity was restored.

“The entire community went through a tremendous event,” Lestarjette said. “An event of this magnitude affects students and employees as well as buildings.”
