American Family Association breaks up, regroups through e-mail
By ALLEN JONES
Those who don’t recognize the name Tomball American Family Association, may have seen the group’s members the first Sunday of October on the curbside of the city’s freeway with signs in hand urging people to put an end to abortions. Others may have seen the group’s members participating in the National Day of Prayer each year in May, gathered around a flag pole outside Tomball City Hall on 401 Market St.
The organization, founded 25 years ago on a mission to protect family and children, is now defunct - sort of.
Billie Goad, the group’s founder, recently announced the Tomball American Family Association, no longer exists as a public meeting organization. The group, operating under a new name -- Christian Solutions for Americas Problems -- will now operate through e-mail and snail mail (the postal service).
Although the group of about 20 members will not longer meet monthly, it will keep in touch through messages and continue its annual projects such as Life Chain, the National Day of Prayer, providing baskets to new mothers who have decided against abortion, and its Child Lures program which teaches parents how to recognize molesters.
Goad said she decided to reorganize the group after having to spend two years as her sick husband’s caretaker. He recently passed away.
“I couldn’t do both things - take care of him and run meetings for Tomball American Family Association,” she said. “And, honestly, membership started to decline.”
When the organization began 25 years ago, it maintained about 30 members. This year, she said, she was lucky to see 20 people at meetings.
“I came up with the idea of sending out e-mails once a month to members,” she said. “We’d cover the same issues and use much of our resources and I hope to keep key people at churches.”
Goad said she really doesn’t know why membership declined.
“That a good question,” she said.
Its possible members simply lost interest and it is possible members know there is something wrong in the nation, but it they no longer think they can do anything about it.
Goad said the nation needs help in solving major problems such as abolishing abortion and protecting children from predators.
“That is basically our mission,” she said. “We are pro-life, pro-family and pro-marriage. We don’t talk politics, we help families.”
Goad said the new group format will be a different avenue for her and its remaining member.
“I don’t know if it will work or not, but it is worth a try,” she said.

“While this new venture doesn’t claim to hall all the answers, we, as Christians, recognize that our Creator has all the solutions that really work,” she said. “It is our desire that many will want to explore these avenues that were a part of the founding of our nation and we can, working together, renew America in many ways.”
