Harvest Moon Regatta Safety Day Oct. 4

Harvest Moon Regatta Chairman Tom Collier has announced that the Safety Day for the 22nd annual Harvest Moon Regatta originally scheduled for Sat., Sept. 13, has been moved to Sat., Oct. 4 because of Hurricane Ike. It will be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club, host for the event. This free educational forum is sponsored by a sub-committee of the club’s Captain’s Roundtable Committee chaired by Jeff Southard and is open to any sailor interested in offshore racing.

“We will cover a wide range of topics for offshore racing, all addressed by professionals, from boat preparation, offshore medication, safety regulations, to entry and docking at Port Aransas at the close of the race,” related Southard.

There will also be a safety equipment display for attendees.

Over 200 boats are expected to race in this year’s event which starts from the Flagship Hotel pier in Galveston on Thurs., Oct. 16, and continues 150 nautical miles across the Gulf of Mexico to Port Aransas.The race is sponsored by Bay Access, an educational charity that promotes amateur sailing in the bay area. Also listed as Platinum sponsors are Bacardi USA, West Marine, Sealake Yacht Sales, and the Harry and Isabel Cameron Foundation. Gold Sponsor is JAM Distributing while the Bronze Sponsor is Elite Yacht Electronics, LLD.


All Harvest Moon Regatta participants are strongly urged to attend the Safety Day workshop. The Regatta is a Category 3 Open Regatta for all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet.

The Harvest Moon Skippers meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, TX.
